Nobody likes that sudden chill when you take a baby out of the bath. You want the room warm, and you want it warm now. But there’s a catch: most infrared heaters are blindingly bright. If you’ve ever looked at a standard heat lamp, you know that harsh white glare. It’s a lot for an adult, let alone a baby. Here is how we handle that. The secret is in the glow. Instead of using a standard lamp that blasts out a white light, we tweak the quartz glass. We add specific dopants or a special coating to shift the light spectrum. Basically, we filter out those aggressive blue and violet wavelengths that stress out the retina. The result? A soft, amber glow. You still get all that cozy heat, but it’s gentle on the eyes. No blinding flashes, just warmth. What’s happening under the hood? We use halogen-filled quartz tubes. Why? Because halogen lets the filament run hotter without burning out as quickly. It lasts longer. The best part is how it feels. Instead of wasting energy trying to heat up all the air in the room, this heat hits the skin directly. It’s an immediate, comforting warmth. A few things to watch out for. Now, there is a trade-off. Because we’re filtering the light to keep it safe, the lamp isn’t as “bright” as a construction light. But that’s exactly what we want here. If you’re building these into a fixture, be careful with the housing. If you put a high-wattage lamp in a cheap plastic case, it’s going to warp or start smelling like burnt plastic. Make sure your reflector and casing can actually handle the heat. Pro tip for the setup: Pair these with a dimmable transformer. That way, you can dial the heat up or down depending on how close the baby is. And please, do yourself a favor: use high-temp silicone leads for the wiring. The ends of those tubes get incredibly hot, and the last thing you want is your insulation melting.
