How to Actually Size Your Mirror Defoggers Without Breaking the Glass
We’ve all been there. You step out of a hot shower, look at the mirror, and see absolutely nothing but a wall of white fog. It happens because the glass is cold and the air is humid—classic physics. To fix it, we use short-wave infrared lamps. The trick is to get the glass just warm enough so the moisture can’t stick. We aren’t trying to turn the bathroom into a sauna; we just want a clear reflection. Getting the power right You can’t just grab any heater and hope for the best. A tiny mirror in a half-bath doesn’t need nearly as much juice as a massive, wall-to-wall mirror in a master suite. If you go overboard with the wattage, you’re asking for trouble. You could actually crack the glass or ruin the silver backing. But if you go too low? You’re still wiping the mirror with a towel. For most standard glass, it’s all about the square footage. A 200W lamp usually does the trick for smaller mirrors. For the big ones, you’ll want 500W or more. Just make sure you spread the lamps out. If you bunch them up in one spot, you’ll end up with “cold spots” where the fog just hangs around. Why infrared? I prefer quartz-halogen tubes because they’re fast. Like, really fast. Unlike those heating pads that take forever to warm up, infrared radiation hits the glass almost instantly. It’s a much cleaner way to handle the heat. One quick tip on the install: watch your spacing. The closer the tube is to the glass, the hotter it gets. But you don’t want it touching. Leave a tiny air gap. It gives the glass room to breathe and expand as it heats up. The balancing act Here’s the trade-off. More power means the fog disappears faster. Sounds great, right? But rapid heat spikes can be brutal on glass. If the mirror isn’t tempered, it can warp or even shatter from the stress. To keep things safe, don’t just leave the heaters running indefinitely. Hook them up to a timer or a humidity sensor. That way, once the mirror is clear, the power cycles off. It keeps the glass happy and your electricity bill lower.
