
Keeping People Warm in Wet Zones
There is nothing worse than stepping out of a cold pool or a shower and shivering your way across a tiled floor to the changing area. You need heat, and you need it right now. That’s why we use shortwave infrared (IR). Most heaters just try to warm up the air, which takes forever. IR is different. It beams energy straight to your skin and the surfaces around you. No waiting around. No lag. Just instant warmth.
Dealing with the Damp
Changing rooms are brutal on electronics. Between the steam, the splashes, and the constant humidity, a basic heater will probably fry or rust out in a few months. We stick to an IP65 rating for these units. In plain English? The “6” keeps the dust out, and the “5” means it can take a hit from water jets coming from any direction without breaking a sweat. We also use heavy-duty industrial gaskets at the electrical junctions. We’ve learned the hard way that if moisture hits those terminals, you’re in trouble.
The Science of “Instant”
We go with quartz halogen elements here. Because shortwave IR operates at a higher frequency, the heat actually penetrates deeper and hits faster. The warm-up time is basically zero. But here is the catch: that “luxury” feeling of instant heat requires a lot of power. It puts a real load on your circuit. Just make sure your wiring can handle the peak wattage, or you’ll be spending your afternoon resetting tripped breakers.
Getting the Layout Right
These units are built to slide right into the spots where old radiant panels used to be. Since the waterproof casings are a bit heavier, we use reinforced brackets to make sure they stay put. One thing to keep in mind: IR works on a “line-of-sight” basis. It doesn’t bend around corners. If you have deep alcoves or partitions in your changing area, you have to be smart about where you place the emitters. If someone steps behind a wall, the heat disappears. To fix this, we usually suggest an overlapping grid. It’s the best way to make sure there aren’t any annoying cold spots left in the room.
